LACEY SCHEELER, Photo Identification Liaison Intern

University of Hawai’i at Hilo

Lacey is a senior undergraduate studying Marine Science at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. She is interested in working in shark research after graduation and wanted to get more involved in projects within the community. As her senior internship capstone project, she is learning about oceanic whitetip sharks, databases, and creating photo identifications. She is excited to continue her shark education this summer at UH Hilo delving into the class, MARE 380 Natural History of sharks, and rays. She will learn in more detail the biological, ecological, and conservation efforts of sharks and rays alongside studying and discussing current research papers. In the lab portion of the class, she will gain hands-on experience tagging sharks. Outside of studying she enjoys visiting national parks, hiking, boating, and snorkeling.
