With twenty years in commercial fisheries, I fully understand the strength in partnering with fishermen to perform research. I am particularly interested in applying research to fisheries management and providing solutions to sustainable commercial fishing while reducing impacts on incidental catch. Currently, I am investigating electronic monitoring in the Hawaii longline commercial fisheries and shark satellite tagging as a means to develop a greater understanding of fishing interactions with these animals. I particularly hope to examine how different shark species utilize the environment and how this overlaps with commercial fishing movement patterns.
